The Faculty of Architecture is one of 24 faculties within the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje, the largest of the public universities in the Republic of North Macedonia.
Until 2004, the Faculty of Architecture was the only higher education institution in the Republic of North Macedonia preparing professionals in the fields of architecture and urban planning, as well as their complementary disciplines, at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.
Throughout its 75-year history, the faculty has undergone several significant developmental phases. The first architecture studies were organized in 1949 within the newly established Technical Faculty, which had two departments: Architecture and Civil Engineering. Later, in 1955, the Technical Faculty established the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, also with two departments – Architecture and Civil Engineering. In 1976, the Architecture Department became an independent Faculty of Architecture, offering a single study program in architecture lasting nine to ten semesters.
Since the 2007/2008 academic year, the Faculty of Architecture has operated under a new five-year study program (integrated first and second cycle studies) in Architecture, in accordance with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). After completing the third year, the program allows an intermediate exit with a diploma granting the professional title of Bachelor of Architecture. Upon completing the tenth semester and defending the master’s thesis, the program provides a diploma conferring the title of Master of Architecture. According to the Law on Construction, this diploma qualifies graduates to practice as professional architects and enables them to obtain authorization from the Chamber of Architects and other Construction Engineers.
By 2012, a total of 4,305 students had graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Skopje with the degree of Bachelor of Architecture. Forty students completed postgraduate studies under the old study program, earning the academic title Master of Technical Sciences in Architecture, while 30 students completed the ECTS-based program, obtaining the degree of Master of Architecture. Through the faculty’s mentorship-based doctoral studies, 28 candidates earned the academic title Doctor of Technical Sciences in Architecture.
Since 1992, the Faculty of Architecture has continuously organized the International Summer School of Architecture, which has so far attracted around 600 local students and approximately 280 students, professors, and assistants from various countries across Europe and the world.
Throughout its 75-year history, the Faculty of Architecture in Skopje has established equally high standards of education, respected traditions, and a reputation as a leading higher education institution in architecture. It provides architecture students with the highest quality instruction in both theoretical and practical knowledge in areas such as architectural design, history and theory of architecture and the arts, urbanism and urban planning and design, architectural structures, modern construction technologies, and methods for managing design and construction processes. The faculty enables students to acquire advanced professional and practical competencies in accordance with the highest European standards.
